Q1. Answer the following :-

1. What gifts did the three daughters ask for?

 Ans. The eldest daughter asked for a gold crown. The second daughter wanted a mirror as clear as crystal. Nastenka, the youngest daughter wanted only a scarlet flower.

2. How did the merchant spot the scarlet flower? What happened then ?

Ans. One day, some robbers attacked the merchant. He fled to the woods and wandered around till he reached a lovely garden. He spotted the most beautiful scarlet flower in the middle of the garden. When he reached out to pluck the flower, a terrible beast appeared before him. The beast was very angry with the merchant and imprisoned him.

3. Why were Nastenka’s older sisters jealous of her? How did they trick her?

Ans. The older sisters were jealous of Nastenka’s happiness and riches. They tricked her by turning back the clock and shutting the windows, so that she would not know that three days were over.

4. What did Nastenka find when she returned back to the palace of the beast after three days?

Ans. When she returned to the palace of the beast after three days, Nastenka saw the beast dying near the scarlet flower.
